2001 Pecans
Brundidge, Alabama

The photos below were made in October, 2001 of the nuts from one of our Schley pecan trees. We have 8 old pecan trees which are principally Schley and Success. 2001 was the best year yet (of the 7 years we have lived here) for our pecan harvest. We picked up over 1000 pounds of clean pecans in 2001. We thought this was a good yield, considering that we did not fertilize, water or spray the trees. The squirrels ate many, and several hundred pounds more were left on the ground. All were gathered by hand without any mechanical aids. A conservative estimate of our aggregate effort in gathering these nuts is approximately 50 man-hours. The nuts began to fall in early October and finished by January. The majority of our harvest was sold to local pecan merchants; some were shelled, frozen or given as holiday gifts.
