Tentative Colonial BancGroup Stock Purchase
Although most of our members would like to see some stock purchases in sectors
other than techology, some analysts are suggesting that now is not the time to
purchase regional bank stocks. Bank stocks, apparently, are adversely affected
by prime rate increases (or the threat of increases). Also, the CNB SSG report
suggests that management is not doing all that it can to keep its profits up -
both pre-tax profit on sales and earnings on equity are down. For these reasons,
Irving did not purchase the Colonial BancGroup stock. Note: the shareprice is
continuing to fall. -Ed.
PIG Portfolio Demonstrating Unprecidented Growth
Since Nov. 1, 1999 our portfolio has grown 82%. The primary reasons are divestiture
of 3 non-productive stocks and remarkable appreciation in 3 tech stocks. By the
close of trading on Friday 2/25/00, Oracle had gained $9, Atmel had gained $4 and
Lucent had gained $3 - all in one day, and despite a loss of 230 points in the Dow
Industrial stock average and a loss of 27 points in the NASDAQ.
Whether we are prepared for it or not, tech stocks are the booming sector. I wouldn't
be surprised if all three of these stocks were to split again this year or next. -Ed.
TheStreet.com Offers Fundamental Analysis Tutorial
TheStreet.com offers a 5-part fundamental analysis tutorial by Andrew Greta. His
series, dealing with balance sheets and income statements, is written in easy-to-
understand language with analogies to common, every-day experiences. I've contacted
TheStreet.com for permission to reproduce the tutorial on our web site. See the
section dealing with fundamental analysis on the PIG home page for a link to this
tutorial. -Ed.
Classified Ad Solicits PIG Partners
Irving has placed a classified advertisement on PC Net ISP soliciting prospective
partners for the PIG. The ad states our monthly contribution requirement and
referrs respondents to our web site. We need to increase our membership in order
to make more frequent stock purchases. -Ed.
